Map of the Land of Tender in Madeleine de Scudéry’s “Clélie, A Roman Tale”, Volume 1 The heroic tale’s map shows the three rivers of Inclination, Recognition and Esteem. The allegorical, imaginary land describes a lesson friendship conceived through prism of “tenderness” and “gallantry”. It was dedicated to Mademoiselle de Longueville and published with great success between 1654 and 1660.
