Paris has WiFi in city parks and museums. But what if you are walking around using a maps application or want to translate the historical markers like the Philippe Starck-designed historic paddles? You need a connection. Use a local eSIM. eSIM is Embedded Security Identity Module…software installed onto a eUICC chip, first used in 2016). The eSIM avoids inserting a physical SIM card.
Another advantage of an eSIM is security: a mobile network is more secure than WiFi (e.g., online banking).
Two Options–For Now

France as with other popular destinations, provides many alternatives for eSIMs. Narrow the decision making by using a local provider. In France, the current local providers are Bouygues (introduced in 2023) and Orange (introduced in 2019).
Request: If you hear of other local networks in France, please let me know (info@colleensparis. com).
YESIM and other third-party eSIMS use a variety of French networks so service may be patchy. Some of the French phone companies who provide a network for third-party eSims are SFR, Orange, Bouygues Telecom and Free.
Don’t Leave Home Without It

Before you leave your home, download an eSIM mobile app with either a QR code or an online application. Activate either the day you leave for France/Europe or wait until you have WiFi at the airport. Use their “Learn More” or “i” buttons to learn more about details of activation and exact coverage for each plan. Orange can be paid in different currencies; Bouygues offers eSIMs paid in Euros. If you plan to travel to other European countries, Bouygues European offers a packaged European plan; Orange Travel requires a separate plan purchase for each country.
French Local Network Offers

This plan works for France and Europe (52 countries) with internet, voice and text within Europe within one eSIM. Purchase the eSIM directly from their website. Buy the eSIM on their website, receive a QR Code by email.
Upon receipt of the email, scan the QR Code anywhere in the world. You will need to be connected to an internet network (WIFI or cellular). Your eSIM is ready. When you arrive in Europe or if you are already in Europe, you just have to select it as your main/primary SIM Card. More Bouygues FAQs.
A Bouygues promotions page includes instructions, benefits, including discount coupons and a credit for international voice and texts. Decide which eSIM for your European holiday.

Orange Travel eSIM for France and eSIM for Europe
The Orange Travel is available for 200 countries. A separate eSIM must be purchased for each country.
You can purchase the Orange Travel eSIM in the Apple Store and Google Play. Prices are shown in various currencies but you will be billed in Euros. Your connection can be used as a hotspot for your other devices or another traveler in your party.
My Experience
Living in France, my local provider, SFR, covers all of Europe; thus, no use for an eSIM. My introduction to eSIM was in December 2024 on a trip he United States. I used a third-party eSIM, YESIM, in Florida, New Zealand and Australia.
Although third-parties may not have 100% coverage 100% of the time, I would still recommend one. With an eSIM, I no longer had to search for a store to purchase a SIM card plan or ask which is the best. Nor did I have to find a safety pin to insert the physical SIM card into my phone. eSIMs and eSIM local providers seem to be in continuous evolution. If you are a visitor to Europe, non-European Union countries are considered Europe for eSIM usage.
