An essential accessory for aristocrats to maintain their paleness like peasants and commoners. Popular with Marie-Antoinette’s entourage, it would be one of the items leading to the unpopularity of Marie-Antoinette herself (dressing like a commoner)

Portrait of the Gohin family 1788 by Louis Léopold Boilly-three generations of an upward mobile family (commercial/industrial bourgeoisie). Julien Gohin is a drugstore merchant in Paris. Wife with spaniel and granddaughter. Daughter and son-in-law (solicitor rue Cambon). Louis Julien and wife points to ships for the Indies and would become one of Paris’s leading color merchants.

French men’s outfit 1780 “à la française” (bodysuit, vest, breeches) began around 1760 and gives a long, slender silhouette. The undergarment is partially concealed at the neck by a pleated collar and a ruffle or tie.
